Wool Accessories for the Best Ironing Results

When you are shopping for a new iron, it is also important to get the right types of ironing accessories. For example, the best iron in the world will only be so good if you are using the wrong type of ironing board pad and cover. Ironing boards are often sold with pads and covers made with synthetic materials, which actually impede the best ironing results. Sonoma Wool Company offers you the best ironing experience with its wool ironing board pads, wool pressing pads, and all-natural fiber (cotton/linen blend) ironing board covers. Once you have used a wool pad and an all-natural ironing board cover, and you have seen how they add to the ease and utility of your iron, you will never go back to synthetic products.

Wool Products Are a Nature-Based Solution

Customers are purchasing more sustainable products as they seek ways to have a lower impact on the environment. Wool is renewable, biodegradable, and recyclable. Even with all those environmentally-friendly qualities, wool has been often overlooked. That is changing as people are being reintroduced to wool products. By procuring wool products and supporting companies that use quality wool in their products, you are helping to regenerate nature, mitigate emissions, and advance the circular economy. Products made from wool are long-lasting and will serve you well for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sonoma Wool Company Ironing Accessories

Wool Ironing Board Pad

What material is used to make Sonoma Wool Company ironing board pads?

The ironing board pads are made from 100% all-natural wool. The wool is sourced from ranchers in the United States.

Why use an ironing board pad?

An ironing board pad helps to keep your clothes in place while you are ironing. It also protects your clothes from the texture of the ironing board and protects your ironing board from the heat and steam from the iron.

Why is wool a good material for an ironing board pad?

The wool in the ironing board pad absorbs steam. This makes for an effective ironing experience with a professional and smooth finish. Wool also retains heat which means your iron does not need to work as hard and will last longer. Lastly, wool resists mold and mildew so the ironing board pad stays fresh use after use.

What size are the ironing board pads?

Sonoma Wool Company ironing board pads are available in two sizes: 56” X 18” and 56” X 22”.  They are happy to make a custom size for you, if you contact them directly at sawyer@sonomawoolcompany.com.

Ordering a Custom Sized Wool Ironing Board Pad

Sonoma Wool Company recommends adding 2 inches on all sides of your Ironing Board so that pad can be wrapped around your board and secured with your own cover. If your board is thicker, then add enough on each side to ensure you can wrap your board. Once we know your size, we will calculate the price and let you know that it is ready to be ordered. Please allow 3-4 weeks for a custom Ironing Board Pad to be sent for you.

Will the ironing board pad fit under an ironing board cover?

Yes. The wool ironing board pads are approximately ¼”-⅜” thick, which are thicker than the pads that are included with most ironing boards. They are specifically designed to fit under an ironing board cover. The cover will secure the pad in place on your ironing board.

Wool Pressing Pad

What material is used to make Sonoma Wool Company wool pressing pads?

The pressing pads are made with 100% wool. Just like the wool ironing board pads, the wool is sourced from family-owned ranches in the United States. These products support domestic agriculturalists and family-owned businesses.

Why is wool a good material for a pressing pad?

Wool retains heat which means your fabric is essentially pressed from both sides at once. The heat on both sides reduces the time needed to get a flat and crisp press. Wool is also a durable resource to use for a pressing pad. Many quilters have a beloved pressing pad that they have been using for years.

What size are the pressing pads?

Sonoma Wool Company pressing pads are available in two sizes: 14” X 14” and 18” X 24”.

How thick is the pressing pad?

The pressing pads are ½” thick and can easily accommodate placement pins.

Does a pressing pad need to be used on top of an ironing board?

If you are using dry heat, the pressing pad does not need to be placed on an ironing board. Some people even use a pressing pad as a portable ironing board. Your pressing pad can be used on top of an ironing board if you choose. Some people like the convenience of the height of an ironing board when using their pressing pad.

Can steam be used with a wool pressing pad?
Yes, steam can be used. It is recommended that the pressing pad be placed on an ironing board if steam is used. This is so that the surface under the pressing pad can be protected. Wool is antimicrobial, but if the pressing pad gets wet be sure to let it air dry in between uses.

Why use a pressing pad instead of a regular ironing board?

Quilters like using pressing pads to get their squares flat while building a quilt. The texture of the pad also helps to maintain the integrity of the fabric so that the squares maintain their shape and do not stretch. Sewers like pressing pads because they can produce crisp seams in fabric. For general ironing needs, a pressing pad adds an additional non-slip surface for ease of use.

All Natural Ironing Board Cover

What materials are used to make Sonoma Wool Company all-natural ironing board covers?

The ironing board covers are a blend of 52% cotton and 48% linen.

Why is linen a good material for an ironing board cover?

Linen is strong and has superior breathability and absorption qualities. It is long lasting and an incomparable upgrade over the flimsy teflon or other synthetic covers that come with many ironing boards. Much like wool, linen is biodegradable and sustainable so using it contributes to a circular economy.

What size are the ironing board covers?

The covers are 20.5” wide and 58.5” long. The covers include a cotton drawstring so they can be adjusted to perfectly fit any standard sized ironing board. Ironing boards typically have one end that is tapered and are 54”-56” long and 14”-18” wide.

Can the ironing board covers be washed?

Yes. It is recommended that the covers be washed with cold water on the delicate cycle. They can also go in the dryer on low heat.
