There are many Wonders of Wool, but really, it is this feature that allows for most others to exist. The structure of the scales encouraging air flow leads to even more positive factors in addition to creating a temperature controlled environment.

Wool is able to resist bed bugs and dust mites because it does not allow for hot moist areas to form in its fibers. The same goes for it's ability to resist mold and mildew. The simple aspect of allowing air to easily move in and out is the number one Wonder of Wool! It creates a breathable fiber that will help you get to sleep and stay asleep, while also resisting those unmentionables!

Wool is also flame retardant, due to this structure. If you were to light a piece of wool on fire, it will crumble and smolder, eventually burning itself out, but not catching flame. Try the same with a cotton ball and you will get a tall flame, eager to jump to another material! This makes wool an excellent insulator for homes. Isn't wool wonderful? There is so much that this fiber can be used to create. Sustainable, renewable, and biodegradable too, wool is an incredible fiber that has so much to give. You might be familiar with those late night advertisements flaunting the next best thing in pillows and blankets. We've noticed they often forget to mention what they are made of - or maybe they just don't want us to know. Most of the time, these so-called wonder products are made out of plastic and other lab-created materials. Recycled styrofoam thrown in to synthetic casing is not what I would like to sleep in, on, or under. Wouldn't you like to cradle what is most important in something natural, and superior, to these synthetic dupes?

Other brands scramble to try to invent different ways to shape their synthetic material mattresses so that they increase air flow and help you fall asleep and stay asleep - something our fantastic Wool Mattress Topper does, naturally!

We cannot stress it enough, wool is a super fiber, that is, at a molecular level, structured to allow for air to easily flow in and out. This means wool breathes! Cool air can come in, hot air can move out - this creates a temperature controlling environment that helps keep you asleep. Night sweats occur because as we sleep, our bodies warm up, and if this hot air is not able to leave the sleeping area, we wake up, having to adjust our sleeping position. Wool helps to keep you asleep, by regulating the temperature of the air within your bedding.

With synthetic fabrics, the hot air, created by your sleeping body, gets trapped near to your skin, causing you to overheat. Natural fibers that breathe, like wool and cotton, will allow for air to come and go, creating the perfect sleeping temperature for a full night of rest.

If you struggle with night sweats, we highly recommend sleeping in, on, and under wool. We also think taking a look at the tags on your sheets and pillow cases is a good idea. Are they made of 100% breathable natural fibers? No matter what your bedding is made of, the sheets encasing it could be affecting the outcome, and your beauty rest! Wool will not be able to 'do its thing' if you wrap it in something that will stifle the airflow, like polyester sheets. Our favorite sheets and pillowcases are made of 100% cotton.

We just can't stress enough how wonderful a fiber wool naturally is. There is no need to bathe it in harsh chemicals, or mix it with synthetics, wool is best when it is virtually untouched, practically right off the ewe's back.

Of course, this isn't completely true. When the ewe's go in for their yearly hair cut, the fleece is scoured (cleaned) with a biodegradable soap to remove the lanolin and clumps of vegetation. Lanolin is the natural oil secreted from sheep's skin, and is great for skin care. Some companies will wash their wool with harsh chemicals (carbonized wool), in order to get all the tiny bits of vegetation out of the fibers. We choose not to use an detergents harmful to our environment or our bodies on our wool.

We also choose not to 'super-wash' our wool. This is a process which applies a chemical treatment to the wool, enabling it to be washed in a washing machine. This completely inhibits wool's fibers from behaving in their wonderful way. The chemical coating prevents the wool from breathing, rendering it unable to resist mold/mildew, dust mites, and more. We want our wool to be able to do its thing - its natural, incredible, practical thing. After much study and practice, we have found that leaving wool virtually untouched will allow it to do what it evolved to do - protect sheep from the elements, meaning cool in the summer, and warm in the winter!

Its remarkable how incredible wool is, and it's no wonder that our ancestors chose to keep sheep with them as they traversed the country sides! Years ago, sheep were bred for meat, milk, and for their fabulous wool, that was used for all sorts of clothing, hats, gloves, bags, carriage tops, and more.

Our slogan is "Re-Discover the Wonders of Wool" because we believe that the qualities that wool has are still practical and 'wonderful' to this day! It is our society that has forgotten. As time has continued, it seems like consumers have gotten used to choosing synthetic, man-made materials that don't do our Earth good. These materials harm our environment, and often don't degrade for hundreds, if not thousands of years!

We recently re-blogged an article on our social media on a PR campaign that Prince Charles did across the pond to get his nation to remember the Wonders of Wool. He buried both a wool sweater and a synthetic sweater (made of mixed polyester materials), and 6 months later came back to dig them up for a team of press. The wool sweater had already begun to decompose! The nutrient rich soils interacted with the wool to begin the composting process, while the sweater made of synthetic materials was unearthed in its original condition. These man made fibers aren't able to degrade in soil and if continued to be produced, will fill up our soil, and prevent future generations from enjoying the supple, rich Earth that we know today.

We are proud to be able to create home goods that are biodegradable and sustainably sourced, made from 100% wool from American sheep ranchers. Supporting domestic sheep ranchers is important to the livelihood of small communities across the US. We believe that the more we can educate consumers on the Wonders of Wool, the more people will begin to switch their choices, from plastic to natural, bettering the environment along the way. Our hope is to strengthen the American wool industry along the way, creating more jobs, and strong communities for the future.
